Quartet K.428 opens with a calm phrase whose chromatic inflections immediately make the key less stable than it first appears. In this Allegro non troppo, all four strings share accompanying figures and answers; the interest lies less in a dominant soloist than in the way each part alters the harmony.

The Andante con moto continues that work through connected lines, expressive silences and changes of register. The Menuetto Allegro tightens the stresses before a more mobile trio. The final Allegro vivace circulates short motifs, multiplies imitative entries and requires great precision at every return.

Begin by taking the first movement broadly enough to hear notes outside the chord and their resolutions. In the Andante, tune sustained sonorities from the cello upwards. For the finale, rehearse entries in pairs, then combine all four parts without hardening the articulation or rushing the cadences.
