36 dances D.365

About this work

The 36 Original Dances D.365, also known as the First Waltzes, occupy 12 pages. The well-known Trauerwalzer is the second number; around it, Schubert renews the motifs through repeated notes, arpeggios, accents, octaves and stepwise lines.

The collection does not follow a mechanical progression. Some numbers remain almost whispered, whereas others suddenly broaden their chords or move the melody into a higher register. Dances 29 to 31 also carry their earlier Atzenbrugger Tänze names in this edition.

Build groups of four or five pieces and mark keys and repeats. The waltz bass should remain stable without becoming heavy. Change the touch with each new motif so that all thirty-six miniatures retain their own identity.
