Schubert’s four Ländler, D 814, fit on four pages yet change their light distinctly. Their keys move from E-flat major to A-flat major, then C minor and C major. At four hands, the two players share a dance in triple metre whose elegance depends less on speed than on the quality of its stresses.
Begin by playing only the bass notes and first beats. They must provide momentum without pinning down the second and third beats. Then add the upper line, followed by the inner voices. The secondo often carries the whole ballroom, allowing the primo to breathe instead of pushing every upbeat.
The repeats are short: use them to alter a dynamic, an articulation or a direction, without inventing a new character at every pass. The third Ländler, in the minor, needs a different colour but retains the same dancing body. Playing all four without a long break reveals their course far better than adding rubato everywhere.
Listen, too, to the way Schubert redistributes the roles. An inner voice may take up the motif while the upper part accompanies; a sustained bass may suddenly become the phrase’s point of departure. Mark these handovers in both parts and decide who leads each opening. The motion feels natural when the player receiving a motif already knows where the other intends to send it.
