Die Forelle Op. 32

About this work

Die Forelle D.550 sets a poem by Christian Friedrich Daniel Schubart. From the introduction, the piano’s rapid figures make the stream sparkle; the vocal line remains simple and mobile while the trout continues to evade the fisherman.

The narrative changes colour when the water is disturbed. Mode, register and accents darken the accompaniment before a final return of the flowing figure lends understated irony to the outcome.

The pianist should keep semiquavers light and even without obscuring the words. The singer can distinguish narration, observation and the closing warning through colour rather than broad ritardandos; prepare the dramatic turn of the final stanza together.
