About this work

The first prelude moves through spaced chords whose inner voices subtly change the colour. Slowness must not immobilise the phrase: every harmony already contains the impulse towards the next.

Play the lines separately to locate common notes and tensions. The upper melody benefits from remaining simple while the bass gives the movement a deep direction.

Renew pedal with the harmony without cutting important sustained notes. A stable inner pulse will allow breathing at cadences without adding a slowdown to every chord.
