1812 Festival Overture Op. 49

About this work

The overture first sets a restrained sacred song against more martial calls. Tchaikovsky does more than place two colours side by side: he builds tension in waves until the fanfares occupy the whole orchestral space.

In the full score, follow the bass through the long rises and notice each point where a motive moves to another section. Those handovers explain the progression more clearly than reading only the upper melody.

In rehearsal, retain a shared pulse as the texture thickens. The brass can play broadly without covering the strings; the spectacular effect comes from accumulation and acceleration, not from establishing maximum volume too soon.
