The Vivace con spirito depicts the appearance of the Alpine fairy. Very short figures pass among strings, winds and the two harps, often high in register and at low volume. This constant mobility creates the impression of material forming and dissolving before it can be grasped.

The movement is nevertheless large in scale. Broader episodes introduce sustained lines and greater orchestral density before the light texture returns in altered form. Changes of register, fleeting doublings and distant replies provide continuity in music that could sound fragmentary if every detail were treated in isolation.

The collective difficulty lies in even passagework and exact handovers. Attacks must remain present without losing lightness, while the harps belong inside the motion rather than creating a separate halo. A tempo at which articulations can still be heard conveys the Vivace spirit more effectively than speed that blurs the circulation of motives.
