Symphonie n°1 en Sol mineur Op. 13 « Rêve d'hiver » - 03 - Scherzo
About this work
This Allegro scherzando giocoso replaces the long lines of the slow movement with a nervous, airborne game. Its lightness comes chiefly from articulation and the swift circulation of motives, not from any lack of sonority. Short accents, woodwind replies and the strings’ continuous motion give the scherzo an almost choreographic precision.
The central section introduces a more connected contrast while retaining the same inner pulse. The score shows how Tchaikovsky thins and thickens the texture without losing the rhythmic design. Silences, isolated attacks and changes of doubling matter as much as the leading lines: they shape the perspective and make each return immediately recognisable.
In performance, speed must not erase the different accents or the ends of phrases. Practising the exchanges between sections slowly helps preserve clarity as the tempo rises. The giocoso character then emerges from extremely exact ensemble work, coupled with the flexibility needed to lead naturally back to the scherzo.
