This waltz replaces the expected scherzo with a dance that is elegant and subtly unstable. The Allegro moderato retains the flexibility of triple time, yet accents, secondary lines and changes of texture quietly disturb its regularity. The melody feels familiar while being continually set in motion again.

The score displays highly transparent orchestration. Strings draw the sway, woodwinds individualise the replies, and small rapid figures occasionally cross the texture like a commentary. In the middle section, circulation becomes more nervous; the returning waltz then regains its grace with a changed inflection.
