Requiem 3. Offertorio

About this work

The Offertorio gives most of its argument to the four solo voices, which gather and separate above an often transparent orchestra. Balance depends on the circulation of the phrase rather than on a fixed hierarchy.

Identify which voice carries each beginning and where the others join it. Shared breaths, consonants and accurate intervals will keep the quartet intelligible without hardening the tone.

In the orchestra, lighten accompaniments when a vocal line descends into a less projecting register. Changes of tempo need to extend the text while retaining a shared pulse.
