About this work
The Ride of the Valkyries advances on a motif recognisable within a few intervals, but its power comes chiefly from the layers that gather around it. In Camille Chevillard's arrangement, Wagner's orchestra becomes two pianos and eight hands. Exchanges, ostinato bass lines, calls and massive chords must remain in clear hierarchy; otherwise, four pianists quickly produce a great deal of courage and very little landscape.
Begin by distributing functions rather than notes alone. Who carries the motif, establishes the pulse, reinforces the harmony or prepares the next entry? Practise the bass lines to a shared metronome, then add the calls without pedal to establish precision. Vertical attacks between the two instruments require a prepared gesture and a shared glance.
Pedalling must be coordinated within each piano and planned around the resonance of the other. In crescendos, add the layers progressively instead of making everyone louder at once. The eight hands must also organise their withdrawals: a secondary voice that recedes at the right moment makes the main motif more powerful. Keep a broad pulse beneath the surface accelerations; even a mythological ride needs firm ground.
