About this work
Erhöhtes Fleisch und Blut was intended for the second day of Pentecost, probably from 1724. Bach adapted almost the entire work from his secular cantata Durchlauchtster Leopold BWV 173a. The surviving music, however, belongs to the 1731 revival and may differ from the first performance.
A tenor recitative with strings leads to an aria broadened by two transverse flutes. Alto and then soprano-bass duet develop forms inherited from the Köthen model. After a recitative for soprano and tenor, Rühre, Höchster, unsern Geist brings together four voices, flutes and strings.
Do not try to erase the secular origin: its dance motion and ritornellos belong to the work’s language. In the duet, keep changes of tempo clear and both voices balanced. The final chorus should retain that suppleness while giving the new text a more collective foundation.
