Cantate BWV 195 - Dem Gerechten muss das Licht immer wieder aufgehen

About this work

Dem Gerechten muß das Licht is a wedding cantata known in several states. One version may date from 1742, or possibly earlier, but only the revision from around 1748–1749 survives complete. Its festive forces bring together three trumpets, timpani, flutes, oboes, strings and a second reinforcing vocal group.

The large opening chorus precedes a recitative and bass aria with winds and strings. A soprano recitative prepares Wir kommen, deine Heiligkeit, an expansive chorus placed before the ceremony. In the late version, a post-wedding chorale replaces the final three numbers of the state from around 1742, which are also printed in this edition.

Rehearse the principal choir and reinforcing voices separately at first to preserve contrapuntal clarity in the large movements. The bass aria needs a lively pulse and shared articulation among the winds. Before performance, choose the final version explicitly: the late chorale and the three earlier numbers do not form one continuous sequence.
