La clarinette passe d’un grave rond et feutré à un aigu lumineux, avec une souplesse qui convient aussi bien au chant qu’aux traits rapides. Elle tient une place importante dans l’orchestre, les ensembles à vent et la musique de chambre, tout en disposant d’un riche répertoire soliste.

Attention à la tonalité de l’instrument

La clarinette est un instrument transpositeur. Les modèles en si bémol et en la sont les plus courants dans le répertoire classique, mais il existe d’autres membres de la famille. Une partie prévue pour clarinette en la ne se lit donc pas telle quelle sur une clarinette en si bémol sans transposition.

Avant de choisir, vérifiez l’instrument indiqué, la présence de l’accompagnement et l’étendue de la partie. Les changements de registre, les passages rapides sur le « pont », le souffle et l’articulation influencent fortement la difficulté. Pour une œuvre avec piano, une édition complète doit normalement distinguer la partie de clarinette du conducteur utilisé par l’accompagnateur.
